Our family wants to get back into a model train, after seeing our friends Xmas setup. We like the detail of O scale sized pieces, plus they may be easier for our little girl to work with. (I pulled out some of my old HO and American Flyer pieces-they will need a lot of work to run).

We have decied to bypass a "starter set" and got with individual peices so we can build the setup we want. Being new, we are looking for recommendations on engines. We are interested in freight-diesel styles, with a non-digital controller. Been looking on web sites, including E-bay, to find out info, pricing, etc. We can tell the good stuff from the junk, be not sure what we really should be looking for to get a long-lasting piece. Any hints/guidelines or recommendations will be appreciated.

Thanks much and Happy New Year!

I am an HO scale modeler, but I hear that Atlas' line of O scale products would be a good place to start fron as they offer almost everything from proper scale rolling stock. (Lionel and K-line are almost garunteed to be out of scale) to track and buildings.

If you want to stay in O guage, Weaver, and Mikes Train House, AND OTHERS make scale equipment that runs on tinplate track.
Also - if you want more realism, us Gargrave track and switches - it comes in 3 foot flexible track, and makes a very nice loockin track - this is also called HI-RAIL - when using scale equipment on 3 rail track.

I just started back also, and have chosen 0-27. I'm real pleased with a Lionel Hudson Jr. 4-6-4 & Tinder with Signal Sounds. Bought it for $139 from Wholesaletrains.com. (I think the MSRP on that unit is $199) It's really a beautiful train.
