That will depend on how big a radius you are running. The radius will be determined by how long the equipment will be that you are running. Finally, large radius curves look much better than short radius curves.
To answer your second question, concerning roadbed, in either case use glue rather than nails to hold your track down. If you want to spike your track down, you would be better off using homosote for subroadbed; and then ballast it afterward.

Glueing the switch down prevents many problems caused by nailing. If you pound the nail to far you can change the gauge of the track and you then go out and have to buy a new switch. with Gluing, all you have to make sure is keep it clear of the points and the throw bar and you dont have to worry about ruinting the switch while trying to install it.
