You can do it, but you have to be careful not to have both power sources trying to feed the same section of track at the same time. You need to have at least two crossovers or one for each train you are running. You need to have both tracks set up with blocks that can be shut down to isolate the power packs from each other. You would need to gap both rails in the center of each crossover. If one operator is running both trains, you would probably need to stop one where it could be isolated from the effected tracks, then cross the other one over. You would probably have to stop the one you just crossed over, and then cross the first one over. If the layout is big enough, and the crossovers are far enough apart, you might be able to do it with slow running.
The reason you don't want two power packs feeding the same track section at once is because feedback will cause one pack to blow out the power transistor of the other pack. Generally whichever pack puts out more power will take out the one putting out less power.
