I am starting a 8' X 16' L shaped layout of the Ashland Coal & Iron circa 1920/25.I will have 2 location's that would use a tunnel to good use,but can't find any refrence to them in all my research.Without haveing to resort to driveing 3,000 mile's to look first hand,is there anybody out there that can tell me if there was/is or ever was tunnel's in eastern Kentucky.

Now this want really help you request but I thought that you may be able to help me.
I'm modeling a finctional railroad set in the Colorado region, I relise you are modeling Kentucky, but I am modeling a coal mining area and am trying to track down as much information, images and the topic. I live in New Zealand so it makes it a bit hard to get the right resources. Hopefully you can help me, good luck with your request anyway.

Oh yeha I forgot to mentioN i am modelign the smae era as you this is why I'm asking about coal mining resources, information.
I guessing your using the correct hoppers for the era:
"35 foot twin bay coal hoppers for your coal mine. These cars had a 55 tone capacity"
If you are using these hoppers, where did you get them from?
Hoepfully my requests wont bother you considering you were actually wanting an answer to your own request.

Howdy there Jason.
A fast way to find info is to do a search under "USA/Colorado/Railway's".
I will run more 26 foot hopper's than the 35 footer's.The shorter car's are better at handleing the tight(15" radius at some point's!!)upper mountain spur line's.They will be handled by twin 0-4-0's and 0-6-0's.While the 35 footer's will be filled at the Collerie for main line shipping to distant point's.

YES YES YES!!!
There are in fact 21 tunnel's in Kentucky,and best of all!! The "Means Tunnel" is but 15 1/2 mile's west of Ashland Kentucky.Darn near in the middle of my layout.
I'm getting to like that USGS web sight after all.
