I'm trying to build a picture of the rail fleet management market.

* Who are the big players?
* Approximately what percentage of 1.4M railcars in service are managed by third parties?
* What are the typical fleet management fees charged per car?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Nathan the Fleet Fan

Nathan, virtually all of the railroad-marked fleet is managed by the owners or lessors. By far the largest non-railroad owner/lessor is GE Capital Railcar Services. As far as private-marked cars, General American, Union Tank Car, and again GE Capital Railcar Services pretty much manage their fleets leased to others. Some of the larger chemical companies manage their own fleets, as do the utilities. While their are a few companies that offer fleet management services, private car fleet operations are so intrinsically intertwined with production and sales that basically all these companies do is recordkeeping rather than management.
