I am attending the Portland get together in July and want to buy a scanner to listen to the train communications. Do I need an analog or digital scanner?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

You can use either. Analog or digital refers only to the internal electronics of the scanner.

But from a practical standpoint digital scanners are easier to use and more effective.

Analog scanner would be your best bet if you only want to listen to RR radio. Digital scanners can receive digital trunked radio systems. Some police, fire and other public safety radio users, use digital. But if railroad radio is the only thing you want to listen to, then a analog scanner is all you need.
