I recently read in the paper about a freak accident on the BNSF in Buena Park where a crew on a westbound around 2AM were about to meet another train and somehow thought they were on the same track. For some reason, the conductor jumped while the train was still going about 40 mph and died as a result. The engineer brought the train to a stop several hundred feet from the other train, which turned out to be on the other track!

I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like this happening. I wonder why the westbound didn't radio the other train and why the conductor decided to jump instead of riding it out or at least letting the train slow down some. Anyone know more about this?
