Where can I find a site that tells me about how trains go down hills and calculate top speed and whatnot? It's for school.

Your question relates to pure physics indeed.
Speed will be determined by the slope of the hill (grade), the weight of the train, the friction of the wheels, brakes, etc. and environmental conditions (wind, etc.)
I would try a trip to the local library, (or the internet library) and look for formulas having to do with gravity or newtons law.
