Does anyone know how many freight trains pass through the Salinas CA area each day, and if so, what time of day one can expect to see them? I live about 20 miles away, and I'd like to photograph a few trains if it is possible to determine when the will be there.

I know of at least 6 through freights on the Coast Line that run the whle distance on the Coast Line.
Join the "Headsupcoastfans" Group at yahoogroups to keep up on the latest happenings on the former SP Coast Line in California. Here is that URL:

I hope this info helps!

Thanks, Daniel. I'll keep an eye on the Yahoo group. Maybe one of these days I might get a photo. I'm also hoping I can find time to photograph the Coast Starlight somewhere outside of Salinas. Maybe near Castroville. That is easier, though, because I can easily find out how it is progressing.

A long long time ago, in a California that was before Proposition 13, two of the very best places for photos were at Gaviota and Refugio State Beaches, down in Santa Barbara County!
