BNSF's yard in San Diego is located in National City, just off the 5 freeway and around 24th street. Most of BNSF's freights out of San Diego run at night so as to not interfere with passenger trains.
The other railroad, San Diego & Imperial Valley, I don't know where there yards are, but it also may be located in National City/Chula Vista area.

BNSF's yard in San Diego is in San Diego w/ tracks going thru National City. It's about 2 miles So. of the AMTRAK (old Santa Fe) station. The south end(RR east) of the yard crosses 22nd St. Get a Thomas Bros. or Delorme map book. The SD&IV yard is just east of BNSF's. BNSF does switch days but not north of station. There a a very few day time thru road frieghts in beteween Amtrak & Coaster passenger trains.SD&IV switches nites because they run on tracks owned by Tiajuana Trolley now. Don't know if there is a day time yard job.

Hi Muito,
If you come up to Orange County, you can go to Fullerton Station which is a nice place to take pics of Amtrak, Metrolink and BNSF.
There's yard in LA, Union Pacific has a yard off Santa Fe rd, off the 405(just exit at Santa Fe, and you're there)I think it's funny, a UP yard off Santa Fe rd.
There is a maintanance yard next to the 5 in LA, off Washington, I found you can see some trains from behind Denny's.
There's a couple engines that just park for the night in Anaheim, off Boradway, and you can't see it but it's next to the 5; and 91 and Main St exit, there's 2 blue & yellow Santa Fe's with a caboose that park for the night.

I know this may not be a popular post and many may not agree but I thought it was important to make a comment.
Our country changed after 9/11 and threats can come in many new forms including our rail systems.
I would have some reservation providing specific directions to "strangers" regarding where to find parked train engines, cars, and other equipment, and the ability to "get close to them" for whatever stated purpose. It's one thing to photograph a moving train or take photos at a public station but I think rail yards are a different situation.
Granted the threat maybe small but it still does exist.
Just food for thought. Thank you.

There is no good place to view the BNSF & SDIV yard operations except from the one public grade xing. That is very limited viewing anyway. Definetely DO NOT TRESPASS. The RR police & rent a cops are very quick to "intercede" since 9/11.
