As a newcomer to this thread and a vistor from the "right coast" i had some questions about this commuter line.
Does any freight still operate over it ?
Any expansions in commuter service and stations ?

While I'm not that familiar with the operations today, I do know that it is still used for freight. Prior to Metrolink, and it still is,it was one of the great places to be able to follow a train with many photogenic spots. If you look closely you will notice the many sections where some of the tighter curves have been smoothed out in order to speed up the trains.

There is freight service on this line, but the line to Colton probably sees more traffic. Some commuter stations were initially opened quickly in '94 after the Northridge earthquake, and have since been upgraded somewhat. The Lancaster station (northern terminal for commuter trains) has a building with historic station photos inside.
Since there is no Amtrak rail service on this line, the Metrolink trains operate several round trips on Saturdays.
