Today I saw a GP30 in old BN green gliding into the helper yard at Essex, Mt., on the BNSF High Line. It was coupled to another GP, probably a 38 or 40 (I couldn't tell) and the pair was then coupled onto a plow.

Are GP30s fairly rare in service anywhere in the US now? Does the BNSF use any more of them?

I was able finally to discover that BNSF has eight GP30s in service, mostly on secondary lines, and they have all been rebuilt as "GP39m" and "GP39u" with 645-series power takeoffs applied to their 567 engines.

This morning a GP30/39 and a GP38 pushed a plow/flanger out of the Essex yard westbound, presumably to Marias Pass. Fun place to trainwatch on the bridge by the Izaak Walton Inn.

There's plenty of the old Santa Fe GP30s still running around mostly around the old Santa Fe tracks. Guess just like the few old BN ones in your area.

GP-30s?

Heck, there's a high-hood SD still mucking around the Q from Kansas City to St Joseph.

I see GP-30s in:

BN green, corporate (striped nose) scheme
BN gree, lease (big BN on nose, white door) sheme
ATSF yellowbonnet
BNSF Green/Orange.

Come to Kansas City. We got GP-30s.
