Okay, I am not familiar with Nebraska railroading at all. I stayed at Fort Robinson which is west of Crawford. Getting there late at night (okay 5 pm) I decided just to walk around for a while. I did not know where I was but i tripped in a ditch I did not see and my hand came to rest on something cold. I soon realized that It was a rail and took my mag lite out of my pocket just to look. I noticed a track that was covered in decomposing leaves and dead weeds and decided to come back in the morning. I came back to find the 3 miles of track into Crawford was turned into the White River Trail and wonderd If this was the old C&NW Cowboy line into the Poweder River basin that DM&E was looking to rebuild.??

This isn't a total answer to your question... but the Cowboy line did run through Fort Robinson. My railroad atlas shows this line to have been abandonded from Crawford to Crandall WY. Interesting there's still track there. I'd bet that this would be part of DME's rebuild activity, but that I can't say for sure.

This map (url below; could not fit on one line) in TopoZone identifies it as C&NW. If you arrow over to left about 8 times you will get to the map where they identify it as C&NW.
