Last week I made a 5 day trip on Amtrak from
Atlanta up to Milwaukee and back. One thing I noticed on the way were a number of propane (natural gas?) tanks near the tracks. These are household sized tanks, which look like they are plumbed into underground lines.

Anyone know what they are for?

Thanks,
Dave

Most likely, they provide fuel for switch heaters.

That makes sense, since they did appear at switches along the way.

Thanks,
Dave
