I have seen this word a alot at RR websites. I hope I'm not too much behind the times (as far as railoading), but what exactly is a Foamer?

The next step up from being a "railfan". Foamers go out of the way to see any type of excursion, rare equipment move, or anything else like that. They know more about railroads than most railroaders, and have over, say, 8,000 railroad slides in their collection. (This may be too low a number, or not high enough, depending on how long one has been a foamer). A few years ago, this question was asked on RR.net, and the answer I posted was: 'Someone becomes a foamer when all common sense is lost, and the person stands on the tracks to get the perfect shot of a train, but can't hear it coming because his/her scanner is turned up to loud.'

Thanks. Hmm....it seems like I was more like a "foamer" when I first became a railfan (20 years ago) than now (LOL)!

Equivelant of Trekkies; those who are over the top with their selected fandom. In other words they got too much of whatever their interest is.
I'm a Trekker and a Railfan, never a foamer!(my hubby is a different story with trains)

Thanks Konstantin. Coach34135, I'm a Trekker (or Trekkie, whichever they use these days), too. BUT, I've only been to one convention (when I was six), and don't have more than 3 ST posters on my wall!

Is this like the difference between sf and sci-fi? You know, sf is "serious" science fiction (Isaac Asimov, anyone?), whereas sci-fi is over-the-top Buck Rogers stuff.
