Any fans of the BAR in Northern Maine might be interested to learn that after 111 years the BAR will no longer exist after Jan. 1 2003. The BAR and several small roads formerly owned by Iron Roads have been purchased by Rail World Inc. and will be known as Montreal Maine And Atlantic. it will be a very sad day for me, I worked on the BAR, for 42 1/2 years retiring as a Hostler in 1988.

Even as a newbie I can understand how the passing of a line can be very sad.
But ... as a newbie I really need a glossary ... exactly what is a Hostler

Things have changed a lot in the last 15 years, but when I retired a Hostler was the only employee, other than engine crews that was allowed to move locomotives in the engine house territory. Some of the hostlers duties were coaling/fueling locomotives and a long list of misc. duties.
