I'm visiting NY State and need to do some train photography for kids books. Does anyone know the best place to photograph a range of stationary trains or very slow moving trains? I keep hearing about Flemmington NJ but can't find any info.

I've done a lot of trainspotting in Metropark, NJ. The NJT, Amtrak and Acela trains that stop here move in pretty slow, but the environs are not photo-friendly. Some great spots in the vicinity should be along the NJT Jersey shoreline - south of Woodbridge to Bay Head. If road crossings at grade have a sidewalk, you could try them out - away from the tracks.

NJ Transit has announced that it is going to try to stop people from photographing its property, even outside in public. I used to live near the North Jersey Coast line, and there are good places to take pictures, but until NJ Transit gets some egg on its face with this indefensible policy, taking pictures of NJ Transit may be a hassle.
Flemington, NJ, has a steam railroad that definitely goes slow and offers a short ride. Photographers are welcome. Allaire State Park, the last time I checked, also had an active steam engine. But I guess you'd want some modern trains too. Along the Hudson River in New York are some very scenic locations, with the trains following the river's edge in many places.
