Not only on my last trip on the Coast Starlight (the one where all the parlor cars where replaced with a second Sight Seer Lounge) but also the one before it, someone got into a fight with the lounge car atendant, a man sitting just across from me had just come back from the lounge car the whole time he had been real qiet and kept to himself then I decided to visit the lounge car too on my way there the same guy was on his way back to the lounge but when I got there all I could hear was poeple talking loudly and trying to go back to there seats the guy across from me had tried to return something that he had already opened and when the atendant said no they got into a big argument. They closed the lounge and stopped the train, out the window I could see the conductor standing out side looking at the ground and thinking for a few moments and went back in side, the man who started it was told if he didnt stop he'd be thronoff the train. The year before that I was already in the lounge car and some guy kept giving the atendant an aditude just because he wanted his coffee the atendant kept saying the conductor was on his way with the coffee beans. And with an aditude he asked every Amtrak staff member that came down the stairs was if they were the conductor with his coffee. So they stopped the train and I went back to my seat and watched a police car pull up along side the train, but then the train pulled away and left the cop car behind. As the train left the Gledale station I looked out the window and seen the guy on a bench with two police talking to him, one look like he wanted to arrest him rite there.
Bolth times it happened at the 10:30 point of the trip around Glendale. THE END.

Even the best train crew can become a moving target for passenger abuse.

But during many Amtrak trips I've taken, I've noticed a recurring phenomenon:

If a particular train turns out to have only one sullen, cranky, lazy crew member, it's more often than not the cafe car's counter attendant.

What's even stranger is that the phenomenon is often inversely related to how busy the guy is. The emptier the train, the nastier and more "unattentive" some counter attendants seem to be.

Why? Beats me.

I've observed much the same thing. My theory is that these guys are pretty much confined to one little spot on the train for long periods of time. They don't get to move around much. Probably doesn't do much for morale.

As for the original post, apparently someone wanted to returned an open package and was denied. It would help to know if the product was unsatisfactory, or if the guy just decided he didn't want it. If the former, the guy should have gotten his money back. If the latter the attendant was technically correct in denying a refund. But, in a service oriented business, it is usually best in a case like this to give the customer the benefit of the doubt.

And Jonathon, welcome to the best darned Amtrak board on the internet.

That's very possible in the case of counter attendants who remain glued to their station.

But I've come across a surprising number (particularly on the eastern trains) who've spent most of the trip either "on a break" or sprawled in one of the back booths, glaring at a newspaper and bitching to the conductor for hours on end.

Ask 'em politely for a cup of coffee? You're treading on dangerous ground.

The very few times I have run into nasty or totally incompetant a on board employees was with dining car waiters.Once a waiter was totally rude and virtually threw the food in front of us,and another time we waited 20 munites before we got menus, then another 20 minutes she brought dessert. We asked"where is our dinner?"and she replied"Oh I guess it's European style".20 minutes later,we got our entree and salad at the same time.
